RECREATION SPECIALIST
This is seasonal work in a children’s day camp.
An incumbent in this class is responsible for the conduct and instruction of a specific recreational activity or several closely related activities. An incumbent
instructs in some specialty as scheduled, with considerable freedom as to approach, method and subject material. This position may involve the actual conduct of the activity or the organization and initiation of activity groups and the instruction of recreation leaders in the manner in which the details of the activity are to be carried out. This position may direct and supervise the work of recreation leaders, recreation assistants and camp counselors and volunteers who may be assigned to assist in the instructional phase of
the specified activity.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Gives instruction in the area of specialty, i.e. painting, weaving, dance, jewelry making, music, drama, puppetry, ceramics, etc.
2. Explains and demonstrates the uses of supplies and equipment, and the techniques and procedures used in the activity sessions;
3. Maintains equipment and supplies necessary for classes and/or instruction;
4. Exercises professional judgment and responsibility in the conduct of the specialty activities for various age groups;
5. Requisitions necessary materials, supplies and uniforms;
6. Participates in planning course content;
7. Maintains and files necessary records and paperwork;
8. May plan and conduct field trips.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of both theory and practices of the particular hobby, specialty, or recreational interest, including equipment and materials utilized; skill in particular specialty sufficient to demonstrate techniques of principles to participants; skill in instructing others in techniques of specialty; ability to effectively relate to the client population; personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position; physical ability commensurate with the duties of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and:
EITHER: (A) Completion of a formal course of instruction in the arts, arts and crafts, applied
arts, drama, music or recreation and one year of experience in the specialty area;
OR: (B) Two years of experience in the specialty area:
OR: (C) An equivalent combination of training and experience within the confines of
(A) and (B) above.
