CAMP COUNSELOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
An incumbent in this class is responsible for the supervision and guidance of children at
camp in general activities and assists in instruction programs. Supervision may be
exercised over a small number of counselors-in-training acting as group leaders for the
children. Work is performed under the general supervision of a camp director or
recreation director.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
The following is indicative of the level and types of activities performed by incumbents
in this title. It is not meant to be all-inclusive and does not preclude a supervisor from
assigning activities not listed that could reasonably be expected to be performed by an
employee in this title.
1. Maintains order in a section of the camp;
2. Motivates and supervises campers;
3. Leads sports, crafts, and nature activities;
4. Responsible for the health and safety of the campers in assigned group;
5. Assists in maintaining cleanliness and order of facilities;
6. Maintains and files necessary records and paperwork.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of some form of group activity, e.g. music, dramatics, sports; ability to
get along with and command respect of young children; ability to follow and give
instructions; personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
As prescribed by §7-2.5 of the New York State Sanitary Code: Experience in camping
and supervision of children or completion of an acceptable training course.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must be at least 16 years of age
